Dedication of the Mosaic "La Saetta Iridiscente"

On June 20, 2007, an official ceremony to inaugurate the mosaic mural, "Saetta Irridescente" installed at the World Trade Center PATH Station took place. After September 11, 2001, the Region of the Friuli-Venezia Giulia gifted the mosaic "La Saetta Iridiscente" to the City of New York. This 118-foot long, 12-foot high mural was designed by Giuilio Candussio of the Scuola Mosaicisti del Friuli in Spilimbergo. The mural is an expression of the solidarity and long-standing friendship between the City of New York and the Region of FVG. The abstract art work represents a thunderbolt, it is symbolic of both the tragedy of 9/11 in New York City and that of the devastating earthquake in Friuli in 1976. The gift expresses the appreciation of the Friulan people to the many New Yorkers whose generosity enabled the Region of FVG to rebuild after the earthquake.

Those in attendance at the event included Council Member Tony Avella of the 19th Council District, City of New York; Presidente della Provinicia di Pordenone, Elio De Anna; Sindaco del Comune di Arba, Elvezio Toffolo; Presidente Scuola Mosaicisti del Friuli, Aldo Gerussi; Presidente E.F.A.S.C.E., Luigi Lucchini; Michele Bernardon, the Coordinator and Director of the Museum of Immigration in Cavasso; Linda Wayner, Deputy consul for the UN and Consular Corps, representing Mayor Bloomberg; students from the Liceo Scientifico San Vito al Tagliamento, Provincia di Pordenone; as well as members and friends of the Famee Furlane of New York.

"Sulla Strada del Vecchio Mulino Fino a Ground Zero"

Dr. Roberto De Rosa paid an unexpected visit to the Famee Furlane on Friday January 12. He is the author of “Sulla Strada del Vecchio Mulino,” a collection of stories gathered in the early 1990’s from the townspeople of San Foca, Friuli, and the place of his own birth. Dr. De Rosa is an orthopedist by profession and works in Pordenone and Trieste. He is presently writing a second book, inspired by the tragedy of September 11th, and is collecting stories of Friulan immigrants who passed through Ellis Island for “Sulla Strada del Vecchio Mulino fino a Ground Zero.” Most of these stories of course, are now in the memory of the children and grandchildren of the immigrant generation. Dr. De Rosa will be returning to New York in April and again in the early summer this year and would be very pleased to meet with all who have a story to tell. He may also be contacted at the email address: robertoderosa@tim.it Dr. De Rosa actually discovered the Famee Furlane of New York on the World Wide Web. One of his patients had told him that he met members from the Club when they visited Venice a few years ago. Dr. De Rosa followed up by researching on the Internet, and through a link he discovered Friuli nel Mondo as well! Ce picjûl ca l’é diventât il mont! (How small the world has become!)
